A high level of innovation has now been accomplished for our customer GM. As part of a pilot project, we were able to realize a product data support system within an extremely short space of time: research efforts that once took three weeks in heterogeneous development applications are now reduced to a few clicks within an overarching, intelligent, and intuitively operable application.

This was made possible by the information and research tool SmartSearch, developed by CONWEAVER. It analyses structured as well as unstructured PDM information, links them to each other based upon their content and thematic relations, and integrates everything in a knowledge network.

Significant value added: employees are now able to see through and comprehend multidimensional, technically demanding development processes in the best possible way. The application provides engineers with comprehensive, context related and multilingual information at the touch of a button. As a result, business related change requests can be retraced and decided upon more easily.

Take, for instance, stretching of a new car’s bodywork, which of course influences other parts. The documentation of arising effects and implementation of resulting constructional adaptations is vastly facilitated by SmartSearch. Change decisions, and their consequences, can now be tracked precisely to all persons and components involved in regard to the specific context or request.

To ensure effective access to valuable expert knowledge, data of 16 Lotus Notes and SQL applications containing project information was linked via approximately 200 connected CONWEAVER modules, specified to the needs of Bilfinger, followed by analysis workflows which dynamically checked, structured, translated and connected the data.

The result was an intelligent network, covering integrated data as a whole, enabling a semantic, context-driven search: tore. This intuitively operable search system, now used worldwide within Bilfinger, scours all available knowledge sources with only one request and presents the results clearly arranged in categories, up to date, bilingual, and in the corresponding thematic context.

Tore presents hits clearly categorized by experts, projects, technical information, library records, and Research & Development (R&D). German input thus generates synonymous English results. A query for ”water treatment processes“ also offers documents, or rather material, about industrial water treatment plants, for example. Considering various terms for the same issue, without determining each expression, obviously facilitates the search process while saving a lot of time. For the wording “Brandschutz im Tunnelbau”, tore identifies all experts, among other things. The system not only ‘knows’ that ‘fire protection’ and ‘tunneling’ are the English equivalents to ‘Brandschutz’ and ‘Tunnelbau’. It also identifies the terms within reports that are assigned to projects. Since project, report, and project manager are saved in the project’s database, the latter can be suggested as an expert through the knowledge network’s linking.
